The Universe Has Your Back deck is a slick collection of cards, presenting contemporary spiritual mantras alongside exquisite illustrations.
At first glance, this is a deck perhaps more suited to a place on the bedside table of a free-spirited adolescent, adjacent to their recently hung dream catcher and full of the hopeful promise of becoming a gateway to their emerging spirituality. However, on deeper inspection this is not purely a token deck. Personally, I think that there is an opening in the current modern market for a somewhat ‘easier to access’ type deck which also allows the reader to delve into meatier concepts, and broach ideas that they otherwise may have found difficult to access.
The name on the deck speaks for itself; Gabrielle Bernstein became a known name through her YouTube presence and her best-selling books including ‘The Universe Has Your Back’ and ‘Miracles Now’, both focusing on how to live a divinely guided life. She has even received praise from Oprah Winfrey herself, heralding her as ‘a new thought leader’. Bernstein's ideas are delivered authentically and I felt a certain truth speaking from many of the cards. In some places the phrasing is ordered as if straight from Bernstein’s mind and therefore a few cards did require a re-read before I truly understood the notion behind them. I really liked the rawness of some of the cards: ‘there is nothing sexier than my authentic truth’, however I struggled to get to grips with some of the ‘fluffier’ cards: ‘I am the loving energy of the universe’, for example, and how I could relate such concepts to challenges that may cause me to reach out for the guidance of a deck.
In this sense the self proclaimed collection of ‘52 inspiring messages’ is an accurate description. In many ways the cards are likened to a gentle inspiration for the coming day, and a positive reminder to connect to your authentic self, rather than a deck that will be used more frequently for deeper insight and continued learning. I would question their longevity in that sense, but yes, I will continue to enjoy using this deck for myself, if not only for the beautifully inspiring illustrations, then for the gorgeous messages of connection to the self, positivity, and most importantly self love.
