The Medicine Wheel is the sacred hoop of life's lesson that all must follow. Life begins in the south shield on the sacred hoop path and each of us will travel the circle until death. The Grandfather sun greets us from the east with much wisdom for each day and this path is to know.

More About the Symbol of the Eagle
The eagle is held sacred by many traditions, but especially so in the Native American tradition. The eagle flies high, symbolically close to spirit, and its cry is like a high-pitched screech, calling to spirit for recognition. The eagle teaches us to live our lives on earth while remaining connected to the spirit realms. It teaches us to follow our true path - that which is really meant to be happening in our life for the greater good. So in this way the eagle is connected to courage - the ability to follow what is right, and to confront our fears, as that is how we change to become better and happier people. Eagle can see far from his high-flying position, so symbolically relates to seeing the bigger picture, not getting involved in things that aren't important.

More About the Medicine Wheel Symbol
The medicine wheel is an all encompassing system of life common to most Native American traditions. It has four directions: the East, South, West and the North. Here is one simple interpretation of what each direction represents:

  • East: yellow / mental / air / birth / eagle
  • South: white / emotional / water / childhood / coyote
  • West: black / physical / earth / adulthood / bear
  • North: red / spiritual / fire / elder / buffalo

Whole books have been written about the medicine wheel and what each direction represents and the exact colours and positions of the various elements can vary between tribes and teachers but this does not matter too much (as long as you stick with the system you become familiar with) as the basic message is that to live to your highest potential and happiness you must put all four aspects into balance. This is a system (like the Kaballah is a system) that can be studied and applied to daily living. The medicine wheel as a symbol is a symbol of balance and reconciliation with yourself. To wear or have around you this symbol states your intention to live in balance and manifest the joy and peace this balance will bring. The four colours also represent the Asian people / white people / black people / and the native people so in this way the medicine wheel is also a symbol of world peace as well as inner peace.

Staff Review by Brett Almond

We do a range of incenses from Sage Spirit. They each use the same manufacturing style, using the bamboo centre and a charcoal based coating that results in a slow burning, low smoke kind of incense.

This one is fresh and zesty out of the packet before you have started to burn it. Once burning, the smell is much more reminiscent of sandalwood based Japanese incense. This incense is for someone who would like the mildest of backgrounds. The smell is mildly sweet combined with a deeper earthier note. If you just like a mild incense without all the strong bells and whistles this might appeal.

In this particular range of incense from Sage Spirit there are 5 incenses. There is one for each of the four directions in the Native American medicine wheel and one for the centre. This direction is the East, which is more often than not associated with the eagle. What each of the four directions (East, South, West, North) represents can vary slightly from tribe to tribe in the USA but in the tradition I am most familiar with the East. It is about birth, the sunrise and new beginnings and also, as the title of the incense suggests - illumination.

This incense is really subtle. There is very little smoke. In fact it is almost smokeless so you cannot immediately see the fragrance coming off, but after a few minutes you can smell it.

Some may buy it for the smell while others may wish to buy it so they can burn with the intention of bringing new energy and impetus into their lives.
